Kyle Walker, a physics and philosophy senior at The University of Tulsa, was recently honored by the Overseas Press Club Foundation, which encourages aspiring journalists to pursue careers as foreign correspondents. Walker was among 15 scholars selected by a panel of journalists from a pool of 175 applicants from 50 colleges. He is the first student from an Oklahoma university to win an OPC award.
Walker received the David Schweisberg Award from Matthew Schweisberg, the brother of the former United Press International China correspondent. Walker’s entry included an essay about Holy Week traditions on the Dalmatian island of Korcula, where groups of local men lead a Good Friday procession singing medieval Croatian hymns.
The OPC scholars were honored with a reception at Reuters, hosted by editor-in-chief Stephen Adler. They received risk management and situational awareness training from Global Journalist Security at The Associated Press headquarters in New York City and met with editors from BuzzFeed and the New York Times.
