Examine the role pop culture plays in America’s heartland with author Lisa Hinrichsen on Friday, April 14 at 4:30 p.m. in McFarlin Library’s Faculty Study. Her lecture, “Pop Goes the South: Southern Studies and the Silly Archive” will explore how pop culture challenges the idyllic vision of southern living. Hinrichsen questions how the silly and sometimes shallow southern persona contrasts to a deeply haunted, melancholic region.
Hinrichsen is the author of Possessing The Past: Trauma, Imagination, And Memory In Post-Plantation Southern Literature. Her research specializes in 20th-century Southern and African American literature, psychoanalytic theory and cultural studies. She is an associate professor of English at the University of Arkansas.
This lecture is sponsored by the Department of English and free to the public.
