It was always assumed Meagan Henningsen would go to college, but no one in her family ever had. When Henningsen, a psychology freshman, got to The University of Tulsa, she saw a need to help first-generation students during their time at college. She started the club Gen1TU. “It can be daunting applying and navigating the first year at a university especially without the help of family experience,” she said. Through Gen1TU, Henningsen wants other first-generation students to know there is a place for them at TU and resources to help them.
Henningsen is also working with TU President Clancy to set up a round table with professors to bring awareness about the obstacles first-generation students have and to create an inclusive environment.
The Collegian recently did a piece about Henningsen. Read the full story here.
