Advanced Techniques in Film Production (FLM-3083)
Course topic: Seminar in Editing
Editing is often called the “invisible art,” both for how it seems to “invisibly” tell a story between thousands of shots and for how its practitioners have long been lesser known in the crafts of moving image production. This course makes the art of editing more visible through examination of its principles and practices. Students will study the work and words of professional editors, and create related projects to improve their understanding of the editing process. Instructor: Jennifer Jones
Understanding Movies (FLM 2863-01/ MSTU 2863-01)
This course provides an introductory overview of cinematic arts, especially fiction features, through studies of form, ideology, history, production, and industry. Are you interested in learning where motion pictures come from, how movies are produced, and why cinema conveys meaning? This is the class for you! Instructor: Justin Rawlins
Media Culture and Power (MSTU 3193 / FLM 3863 / WS 3863)
What does it mean to consider and confront power in media culture? Where do we look for power? What questions do we ask? This course presents an opportunity to develop an invaluable set of skills for critically examining power in our ongoing, everyday interactions with media. This course will ask you to challenge preconceived and sometimes widely held assumptions operating through media culture. You will explore the complex networks connecting media with ideas about identity, taste, space, audience, to name a few. You will unearth the roles that powerful ideas, institutions, communities, and individuals play in U.S. culture and society through media texts, technologies, and organizations.
