Program Objectives

Bachelor of Arts in English

Students who complete the undergraduate program will:

  1. Be exposed to unfamiliar literary works (including film, digital media, and other narrative and poetic forms) and develop an understanding of canonical or traditional texts.
  2. Demonstrate improved reading, writing and thinking skills through careful practice with frequent and substantial feedback from faculty.
  3. Demonstrate a strong sense of curiosity and desire to learn.

Master of Arts in English and Literature

When students complete the M.A. they should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate skills necessary to produce independent, analytical or creative work in English.
  2. Communicate in a style appropriate to the discipline.
  3. Follow ethical guidelines for work in the field.
  4. Write and speak effectively to professional audiences about issues in the field.

Doctor of Philosophy in English and Literature

When students complete the Ph.D. they should be able to:

  1. Conduct original, publishable work in the field.
  2. Demonstrate expertise in two sub-disciplines in the field.
  3. Follow ethical guidelines for work in the field.
  4. Write and speak effectively to professional audiences about issues in the field.
